Text reads "Wild Lectionary, A Preacher's Environmental Resource" over loose green watercolour of a set of hills and trees

Wild Lectionary is for those who want to preach on climate justice themes. In scripture, landforms, skies, waterways, and creatures are transformed. In the world around us they are transformed as well by the advancing global climate crisis. Repeatedly we are called to attend to the wisdom of the more-than-human world. Each week a different contributor offers commentary on the lectionary readings, suggestions for preaching, and links to additional material. We hope you will use and share these resources.

Peace, Imperfection, and Rest: 6th Sunday after Pentecost

From peace proclaimed with the procession of a donkey in Zechariah to praise of God’s compassion and mercy in Psalm 145, this week’s readings push back against war and violence.  In Romans Paul confesses our human entrapment in evil while Jesus points to the lose-lose dynamic of criticism levied at both him and John.  While many of us struggle to let go of the perfectionism drilled into us by white supremacist culture, the freedom of grace empowers us to keep trying and to keep working for climate justice, even when we cannot possibly do it perfectly.  Jesus final invitation in the gospel ties us back into the gentleness of a king entering on a donkey with its invitation to rest, a key component of resisting capitalism and caring for Creation.

Our Mortal Bodies Are a Part of the Whole of Creation: Fourth Sunday after Pentecost, Year A

Many readers and hearers over the centuries have struggled with, or at least wondered about, Paul’s apparent condescension toward the physical body. It comes into question again in this passage from the letter to the Christian community in Rome.

Therefore, do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness… – Romans 6:12-13

3rd Sunday after Pentecost: A gift from the Hawk’s Rock Wamanwawa people

A couple of months ago, I had the chance to sit with an Elder. A Reverend of the Ganosono (Gah‑nuh’-sun‑noh) of the Turtle Clan, Cayuga Nation of the Six Nations Haudenosaunee (Hoh’-den‑noh‑show’-nee) Confederacy at Grand River Territory. He looked at me and said, “So you are Quechua, right?” It was the first time we had ever met.

He began telling me how, years ago, he traveled to Jerusalem and met Pastor Rómulo Sauñe Quicaña, the advocate and translator of the Chuya Qellqa Bible, the Quechua Bible. The same Bible I later found, the one that changed my entire way of relating to Scripture.

Earth Wounds: Ecological Stations of the Cross

Are you planning for Holy Week? Remember our Resource Library!

The resource we’d like to highlight currently is the Ecological Stations of the Cross that we’ve developed and documented to share with you. Salal + Cedar won’t be hosting this event this year. The day we would usually do it, we are prioritizing participating in the Christians for A Free Palestine Event, Naming the Martyrs.

We hope that the practice of Ecological Stations of the Cross can be happening in other communities, even when we cannot host it, as it always holds a special place in the heart of our community.

Under Construction

While it might not look like much is happening on the surface, Wild Lectionary is hard at work behind the scenes. Several Wild Lectionary contributors are part of a Task Group of the Anglican Church of Canada helping to prepare liturgical material for the Feast of the Creator. In 2025 the Anglican church of Canada adopted the Feast of the Creator as a Major Feast within the liturgical calendar to be celebrated on September 1, transferrable to a Sunday within the Season of Creation.
